Cantor Ben’s Final Shabbat Alive Service
with the Beth Shalom Band

June 14th, 2013 at 6:00PM at Congregation Beth Shalom.
All are invited to welcome Shabbat at 6 p.m. with Cantor Ben, Rabbi Werbow, Rabbi Donni and the Beth Shalom Band by praying and singing together. Join us at 7 p.m. for a Shabbat dinner catered by Pomegranate Catering. For dinner reservations  call Judy at 412-421-2288 ext. 110 or e-mail her at [email protected].

Shabbat Services– FRW Sanctuary

Shacharit begins at 9:00 a.m.

A Pezukei D’Zimrah song session led by Beth Shalom singers will begin at 9 a.m. in the Faye Rubenstein Weiss Sanctuary. Traditional services will follow with Rabbi Werbow and Cantor Ben.

Kiddush—After Services

There will be an expanded Kiddush in the Samuel and Minnie Hyman Ballroom following services.  If you wish to make a contribution, please contact Judy at 412-421-2288 ext. 110.

Mincha/ Ma’ariv services starting at 8:55 p.m.

– High Holiday Dialogue with Rabbi Werbow
Participate in this dialogue prompted by a DVD from the Ziegler Rabbinical School
– High Holiday Challah Making – Learn why High Holiday challot are round with raisins, help prepare your very own Challah and sample some Beth Shalom challot
– Shofar Toot-torial – perfect your Shofar blowing skills

-Family Selichot Experience led by Cantor Ben and Rabbi Donni sharing prayers and melodies as an Intergenerational Congregation in the Faye Rubenstein Weiss Sanctuary
-Shiur with Rabbi Werbow and Rabbi Staitman – Develop a personal understanding of God hearing our prayers

10:00p.m. Traditional Selichot and Yamim Nora’im prayers in the Helfant Chapel with the Choir, strings and accompaniment of piano and guitars.

Sephardic Shabbat Alive

The Beth Shalom Band, Choir, Rabbi Donni and Cantor Ben led a musical service with traditional Sephardic and Mizrachi melodies.

Friday, August 10th 6:00 p.m., Sephardic Shabbat Dinner followed by 7:30 p.m. Shabbat Services with special Sephardic & Mizrachi Melodies. RSVP to Judy by August 7th at 412-421-2288 ext. 110.
b. The following day, we will have a Shabbat morning service in the Ballroom starting with a joint lead Pezukei D’Zimrah by multiple congregants. If you would like to lead a prayer for Pezukei D’Zmirah, see # 3a above. Like the previous day, we will have a mixture of Ashkenazi, Mizrachi and Sephardi Melodies. ”

Sounds of Love on Tu B'Av

In the Talmud, Tu b’Av is considered one of the most joyous days in the Jewish calendar. Various joyous events in Jewish history are associated with this day.
During the time of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, the fifteenth of Av marked the beginning of the grape harvest. The Talmud teaches that the daughters of Israel used to dress in white and go out to the vineyards to dance. Young, unmarried men would follow them with the hope of finding a bride.

Friday, August 3rd at 6:00 p.m. in the Helfant Chapel Congregation Beth Shalom presents ~A light nosh followed by a free pre-Shabbat concert with Songs of Love~ Kabbalat Shabbat Services at 7:00 p.m.
